Sunscreen Application Tips to Protect Sensitive Skin

With summer in full swing hanging out in the sun means sunburn risk increases. Proper Sunscreen application is essential to protect sensitive skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

We recently took the kids on a hike to a local nature reserve and had a blast just spending time together in nature. While our main focus was on bug spray we didn't even think to apply sunscreen...

And of course spending hours in the sun caused little faces to become burned.
Yes, epic mom fail.

Your skin is exposed to the sun's harmful UV rays every time you go outside, even on cloudy days and in the winter. While I thought that since we were in the forest the sun wouldn't really get to us, I was so wrong.
It was definitely an eye opening experience to the danger of going outdoors without proper sunscreen protection.

Here are 5 tips for proper sunscreen application.

1. Choose a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher, is water resistant, and provides broad-spectrum coverage, which means it protects you from UVA and UVB rays.

2. Apply sunscreen generously before going outdoors. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and protect you. If you wait until you are in the sun to apply sunscreen, your skin is unprotected and can burn.

3. Apply enough sunscreen to cover all exposed skin. Most adults need about 1 ounce — or enough to fill a shot glass — to fully cover their body. Rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin.

4. Apply sunscreen to all bare skin. Remember your neck, face, ears, tops of your feet and legs. For hard‐to‐reach areas like your back, ask someone to help you or use a spray sunscreen. If you have thinning hair, either apply sunscreen to your scalp or wear a wide‐brimmed hat. To protect your lips, apply a lip balm with a SPF of at least 15.

5. To remain protected when outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating.

In the event that you do get sunburned I have an awesome DIY Sunburn Relief lotion that will cool and soothe damaged skin and help heal and repair it using all natural ingredients.

What you will need:

1 cup aloe vera gel {using the actual plant is best but you can use this also}
1 tsp. vitamin E oil
5-10 drops lavender essential oil
3/4 oz beeswax, grated
1/2 cup grapeseed oil

Directions:

1. In med. bowl, stir together the aloe vera gel, vitamin E and essential oils. Set aside.
2. In double broiler melt beeswax and oil. Stir until smooth and well blended, remove from heat. {you can also put in a microwave safe bowl and heat slowly, every 30sec to 1 min stirring in between times}.
3. After melted stir continuously as you add this mixture to the aloe vera mixture. You will then want to use a hand held electric mixer and incorporate the ingredients on slow speed. {keep pushing down the mix that gets on the sides of the bowl}.
4. Pour final mix into container of your choice. Keep lotion in the refrigerator for up to 6 weeks. {if going out and think you will need this, just keep in a cool, dry place then try to remember to put it back in the fridge}.

Have fun in the sun, but use protection!!

  4. I remember I went to a park without applying sunscreen over my body and until now I have a watch mark on my wrist. Which is a life lesson for me, because I have a sensitive skin and it will take a long time to get back into my original skin color :(
