Southern Homemade Ice-cream
July 15, 2019
Nothing reminds me of summer more than spending time at my maw-maw and paw-paws house. Growing up we would make the over 600 mile journey across two states to go make that long awaited visit.
Once we got there we would feast all day with all the aunts, uncles, and cousins. Then we would all gather outside under the large pecan tree in the back yard while my paw-paw would start bringing out gallon buckets and placing them in the middle of the circle. And I mean lots of gallon buckets!
We would spend the rest of the day shelling pecans and purple hull peas! It was just something our family did together.
Once that was all done my maw-maw would whip up a batch of vanilla homemade ice-cream! Sometimes on special occasions she would make peach flavored ice-cream- those were not as often but oh so special!
For me that was the highlight of the entire trip!
I would gorge myself and fell so sick afterwards!
Oh the memories!!
Recently we had a small family gathering at my house and as an adult I wanted to somewhat carry on that tradition. My grandparents have since passed and the family no longer gets together like they used to- and I live that 600 miles away!
I don't have a pecan tree or purple hull peas but I do have that famous recipe my maw-maw made!
I plan to at least carry on that tradition with my children and someday my grands!
Just be warned---
This recipe is so sweet that it will knock your socks off! So you best wear a double pair of socks- you's gonna need 'em!
Southern Homemade Vanilla Ice-Cream Recipe
4 eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 T. real vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. salt
3 cans evaporated milk
2 cans sweetened condensed milk
whole milk
In a large mixing bowl thoroughly cream the eggs and sugar together. Add vanilla and salt. Then add your cans of milk, stirring until really incorporated together. Pour this into your electric ice-cream maker and top off with whole milk to the fill line.
You can use any type of fresh or frozen fruit to this recipe too! I don't have exact amounts needed but at least start with 1 1/2 cups and go from there...it truly can be tailored to taste!
What family traditions do you have memories of, and do you still do them?
Have you since created your own family traditions that reflect the old family traditions?

Ooh I will have to try this homemade ice cream I’ve never done that before. Most traditions in my family were something I created. Like for Christmas we always buy the kids pjs and a book and they get to open them on Christmas Eve and we sit and eat milk and cookies (leaving some for Santa of course) while I read their books aloud.
