Courage and What It Really Is

What is Courage?

Most people when they hear the word courage they automatically think of someone who has faced death and survived. Or they think of someone with great physical strength. When I think about courage I think about someone who is a dare devil type, no fear.

Here is the definition:

NOUN 1. The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery;2. Obsolete. The heart as the source of emotion.
IDIOMS 3.Have the courage of one's convictions, to act in accordance with one's beliefs, especially in spite of criticism.

When I read these I knew immediately that the courage I want to write about is number 3.

Courage to stand up for your convictions despite what the world would say.

My husband just went through an ordeal of trying to figure out what job to take. It has been a highly stressful time for me and for him {that is why I haven't been around}. We prayed and prayed, we sought council, but there was never a definite answer. So we did what anyone else would have done, he took the job that sounded the best, what would benefit our family.

But was that really what the Lord wanted? The world and our family thought it was great! Good pay, insurance, stability. But the more my hubby moved into this job the more unsettled he became. We continued to pray. Finally the Lord spoke, he needed to go back to his former job.

Now the family doesn't understand why he would give up a good job, why would he give up the insurance. My husband went from construction, instability, no insurance to all the good stuff.

I have always told my husband,

I will stand behind any decision you ever make, so do what you feel the Lord is telling you to do.
He went back to his old job. I am behind him, I stand with him. To me that is being courageous. To stand for, with and in whatever you believe.

I may not be physically strong, in fact I am pretty weak. But I know what the Bible says about wives respect your husbands (Ephesians 5:22-23).

What the world does not see is that the Lord had started a work in my husbands boss and He isn't done yet! My husband has talked to this man, prayed with him, encouraged him, blessed him. The Lord has made all this happen!!

What if this man does not have anyone else in his life to minister to him and now the only one who has is not apart of his life anymore? I truly believe the Lord has something going on we cannot see. The world doesn't get it. Our family may not get it. But we get it!

Money, insurance, stability cannot ever compare to having Jesus on our side!!

If we need money- we pray!
If we need to go to the doctor- we pray!
If we need more hours at work- we pray!

God has never failed us, not even once!!

Courage is not about being strong, fearless or brave. It's standing strong, trusting despite your fears and leaning on Jesus who was, is and will be brave for us!!

  1. Courage is a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I see courage in my children every day and I am proud. I see courage in all the children who are still in foster care trying just to find their way to a family that is deserving of them, a family they deserve. I see courage in the parents I support regularly. I see a lot of courage all around me and for that I am grateful and inspired.

That is beautifully put. I agree with you on that, courage is different for everyone. I am glad you are inspired by the courageous ones around you!

  2. I always think that courage is standing up for, and fighting for what you believe in. I'm not Christian, but I know many people have asked me in the past why I "display" that I'm Wiccan. It's what I believe and it's I'll fight for my right to believe it with all my heart.

  3. I'm not a Christian either but I couldn't agree more with your quote. Courage is standing up for what you believe in & know to be right, regardless of those around you. It's a lesson I've been teaching my daughter since she was little.

Teaching kids to have courage in this day and age is such a challenge, but NEEDS to be done despite the obstacles to teach it. Bullying is getting out of hand and kids need to know how to stand up for themselves or the friend being bullied....that takes courage...good job momma for teaching your daughter!!
