Phobias You Might Have Without Realizing It

Phobias are relatively common, and most people will have at least one thing they are afraid of. In some cases, these phobias can be hugely detrimental to your everyday life, depending on what they are. When you know you have a phobia, you know that you are filled with irrational fear, but you also know that you can avoid certain situations if need be and not trigger your phobia. But you might have some phobias without even realizing it, and this can be even more problematic. Read on to find out more.

Odontophobia

Odontophobia is the fear of going to the dentist. Of course, not many people actively enjoy visiting the dentist, even if there is nothing wrong with their teeth. It can be unnerving and certainly feels like a chore. If work does have to be done, it can be painful, and that can make the anxiety worse. However, when you have odontophobia, you’ll be more than just a little anxious; you’ll be terrified, so much so that you might put off your annual (or six-monthly, which is even better) trip to the dentist and cause yourself a lot more pain than is necessary.

Although it can be hard to get past this problem, one option is to choose an excellent dentist like River Ranch Dental. When you do this, you can be sure of the best treatment, you’ll know that no unnecessary work will be done, and you can relax more when you have caring dentists and nurses around you.

Anthophobia

You're not alone if you didn't know this, but some people are afraid of flowers, and this is known as anthophobia. There are a number of different reasons for why this might occur. Even though things like Venus flytraps don't attack people and would be too slow to do so anyway, people can still be afraid of them, and this can blossom into a fully-fledged flower phobia over time. Others may be afraid of being stung by bees if they are nearby pollinating, so although it’s really a fear of bees (apiphobia), it can become a fear of flowers due to the association. Some people worry that pollen will cause asthma or allergy attacks, so they are afraid of flowers for this reason. Still more associate flowers with funerals and death, and that makes them afraid.

It can be hard to be afraid of flowers during the spring and summer, although the anxiety may well ease during the winter when there are fewer flowers around.

Cynophobia

Fear of dogs can help you avoid getting bitten, but it can also keep you from ever enjoying their company. You would probably never be able to own a dog or date someone who did. Cynophobia often comes from things that happened to you as a child, whether you remember them or not.

If you know what phobias you might have and didn't know before, you can start to be aware of them in the future. You can learn techniques that help you control or lessen your phobia, or you can at least become aware of scenarios you should avoid because they might set it off. If you have any of these phobias, it can help to talk to a therapist about it so you'll be able to get the help you need.
