Health checks are useful for detecting health issues early. This allows you to get treatment before health problems get worse (at which point they may become harder and possibly more expensive to treat). The type of health checks that are recommended can vary by age. Below are a few health checks that are worth getting, as well as information on when to schedule them.

Blood pressure test

High blood pressure typically has no symptoms. However, it can cause damage to our arteries and heart. A blood pressure test can help to determine whether your blood pressure is high or not. Over the age of 18, it’s recommended that you have a blood pressure test every 2 to 5 years, while those over the age of 40 should have a blood pressure test every year. You can buy your own blood pressure monitor to do this from home, or you can get a doctor to do it for you.

Cholesterol test

A cholesterol test can determine whether you have too much cholesterol in your blood. High cholesterol can put you at risk of various health problems from heart attacks to strokes - especially as you get older. It’s recommended that every person over the age of 40 gets a cholesterol test every 5 years.

Breast screening

Breast cancer is very common in women and is often caught too late. A breast screening exam can check for any potential tumors so that any signs of cancer can be detected early. These screenings are recommended to all women over 50 and should be carried out every 3 years.

Cervical screening

Regular cervical screening exams are recommended to all women between the ages of 25 and 64. These exams help to detect early signs of cervical cancer so that treatment can be carried out early. Talk to your doctor about booking an appointment.

Dental check-up

Some people only go to the dentist when they have a toothache or have visible signs of decay. However, these are not the only times you should book a trip to the dentist. In fact, it’s worth seeing a dentist on an annual basis. This can help you to detect problems early that may not be obvious but that could be causing damage, allowing you to treat them before they become severe. If you haven’t seen a dentist in over a year, consider booking a check-up.

Eye exam

If you’ve noticed problems with your vision, it could be important that you take an eye exam - especially if you drive. Eye exams can check that your vision is fine and that you do not need any corrective vision. Even if you think your vision is fine, it’s still worth getting an eye exam every 2 years just to make sure.

Hearing exam

Hearing exams are recommended every decade, and every year for those over 60. If you’ve noticed that your hearing is not as sharp, you may be overdue for a hearing exam. Even if you haven’t noticed any hearing issues, it could be important to go for a check-up - hearing is a sense that can often start to fade without us realising.
