Home Remedies for Strep Throat

"Use Grammarly to check plagiarism, because  plagiarism is like finding your spouse with your secret stash of Oreo's while he is stuffing the last one in his mouth."

So far this year we have been pretty lucky, we have only had to battle strep throat twice in the full 2013 year; 2014 so far we are strep free {knock on wood, thank you Jesus, Praise the Lord!!}

I will say that 2012 was so bad the pharmacist learned how to pronounce my last name, knew the names of all my kids and the doctor said he was going to make a room named after my oldest child. Now that's just sad!! Those poor kids, their bellies were always hurting because of the antibiotics.

I decided that I was going on the search for something all natural to help them get rid of strep throat without using modern medicine. Strep throat is a bacterial infection- it is also a self limited illness that lasts about 5 days. Children are most likely to get this infection and is more serious for them than adults; so use wisdom when choosing to forgo antibiotics and using all natural remedies.

One thing that I learned through lots of research; the human body can and will fight anything that comes into its system if given the chance. When our bodies have fever we are not to get RID of the fever but try to lower it a bit. Once the fever is gone the bacteria or virus has free reign within our bodies because it is no longer fighting. The fever is taking care of the sickness in our bodies for us, so do not get rid of the fever while you are sick. Just make yourself or patient comfortable, drink lots of fluids!!

Another thing I learned is that antibiotics wreak havoc on your digestive system. Once your digestive system is damaged it can take weeks, months and sometimes years to correct it! Antibiotics are full of bacteria killing agents, which play its role in killing strep, but it also kills all the good bacteria that keep the immune system healthy. If you choose to take an antibiotic make sure you stock your refrigerator with tons of yogurt, or take a good probiotic, you will need it!

Instead of running to the doctor at the first sign of strep you can try these remedies first, allowing your body to fight it naturally.

*First make up some chamomile tea sweetened with organic raw honey. This calms the tummy ache and allows it to rest a bit. The Organic raw honey {preferably local} has major antibiotic and antimicrobial properties that help fight the bacteria in the body that caused strep.

*Buy a probiotic that has as many strains as possible, then blend this into cool applesauce. The probiotic will provide your gut with more good bacteria to help fight and kill off that bad bacteria.

Finally, a recipe for the brave in heart. Kids might not like this so have them take it quickly.

1 T honey {pure, raw, organic and local}
1/4 t cayenne pepper
4 cloves of garlic {press through a garlic press}

Those are the proportions, but you will need more than that, so take four tablespoons of honey, one teaspoon of cayenne pepper and sixteen pressed cloves of garlic, and mix that all together.  Take ½ teaspoon to one teaspoon of the formula every 30-60 minutes.

Do not wash it down - let the honey coat the throat. The cayenne brings the blood into the area thus promoting healing.

How long does it take to get over strep throat with the standard medical procedure?  10 days.  This herbal remedy will generally help you get over strep throat in 24 hours.

I have also read that onions and ginger can be used instead of garlic....I may have to try adding ginger, it has a better flavor!!

You can also gargle warm salt water. This seems to also help with throat pain and my kids enjoy making those gargling sounds in the process!!

I need to share with you an awesome program that I was invited to use called Grammarly. I am in love! This program checks for spelling errors, grammar errors and much more! You type your text, paste it into the clipboard and it checks everything! Gotta love it!!

*This recipe is intended for adult use- please use good judgement and wisdom when administering to children.

  1. Thanks for the info. I haven't tried the strep throat remedy, but I have tried one for congestion and sore throat. U believe it had ginger, honey, cayenne pepper, apple cider vinegar, and water. And it really did seem to help. And it didn't taste bad either. Little spicy. But I like spicy.
    Thanks for sharing the info about Grammarly, will have to check that out. My grammar and spelling is awful.

  2. This is interesting. I am the only one in my family who has ever had strep throat. I usually get it every year, but managed to skip last year PTL! I get so desperately sick with it that I can hardly stand it. I will pin this for the next time. Thank you for sharing it and your hair shampoo and conditioning recipes at What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a lovely weekend!

  3. Great post and recipe for strep... I may try your version next time :-) We've always used old school Italian which is equal parts of honey and red wine vinegar. I like the idea of the ginger, though, so that will be my next version... THANKS!

  4. The ginger does sound tastier than the garlic but I have heard that garlic is very healthy. Hopefully I don't need this recipe anytime soon but its good to have on hand just in case. Thanks for linking it up to Snickerdoodle Sunday.

  7. I hear ya about the doctor and pharmacist, it sucks when they see you, smile and say, "Back again"? Which has been mine and my families lives this winter. So many illnesses it seems. I've been doing a lot of research on natural medicines, and am willing to try them to get some relief. PINed this for future reference. :).

  8. I am all for herbal remedies, but some strep can cause severe heart complications such as rheumatic fever. So be careful if you truly have strep then it really needs to be treated with an antibiotic. Your average sore throat however this remedy I have used for years, first given to me by my grandmother. But is your child or you develop a red patches on your tongue then you mostly likely have strep throat and need to be seen by a physician.

  10. Strep throat is a serious illness and needs to be treated with antibiotics. Implying it can be cured "naturally" is borderline irresponsible. Also, if you're going to be dispensing medical advice, learn how to spell. It's wreak, not REEK. If you take antibiotics in an appropriate manner, your digestive system will be fine. Seriously, get a degree before you give people advice about serious medical issues. This is ridiculous.
