Strategies To Combat The Flu This Summer Season

May 05, 2023

Summer is a time to relax and have fun, and the last thing anyone wants is to catch the flu. Unfortunately, the high temperatures don’t deter the flu virus, making it a prime season for infection.

Don’t let the flu bring you down! Here are some effective strategies to combat the flu this summer season.

Vitamin C Is Your Best Friend - Use It:

Have you ever heard that vitamin C helps combat the flu virus? Well, it's true! Vitamin C helps fight off infections and can even boost your immune system. To get enough of this essential vitamin, start consuming more citrus fruits, peppers, kiwi fruit, and spinach. You can also add some freshly squeezed lemon or orange juice to your diet for an extra dose of vitamin C.

Wash Those Hands:

The flu virus is spread through contact, so it's important to keep your hands clean. Make sure to wash your hands before and after eating, using the restroom, or touching anything that could have been contaminated. And as the COVID-19 pandemic taught us - use soap and water and scrub for at least 20 seconds.

Get Restful Zzz’s:

Did your parents ever tell you to go to sleep when you had the flu? Well, there's a good reason for that: restful sleep can help restore your body and give your immune system a much-needed recovery. So if you're feeling run down or fighting off an infection, make sure to get 7-8 hours of rest each night.

Step Up Your Sanitation Game:

This means everything from washing your sheets and pillowcases on a regular basis to wiping down commonly used surfaces like tables, doorknobs, and countertops with a disinfectant. This will help to combat the spread of germs and reduce your chances of contracting the flu virus.

Move Your Muscles:

Exercise is beneficial for keeping the flu virus away. It increases your body's production of endorphins and helps to boost your immune system. You can start by doing some light exercises like swimming, cycling or walking.

Get Your Symptoms Under Control:

If you do get the flu, it's important to treat your symptoms as soon as possible. For example, managing post-nasal drip symptoms usually include drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding triggers like smoke or perfume, and using a humidifier in your home. For fever, take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to bring your temperature down.

If All Fails - Visit The Doctor:

If the flu persists or if your symptoms worsen, it's important to see a doctor so they can prescribe antibiotics or antiviral medications to help get you back on track.

The flu virus is never fun, but with these effective strategies, you can reduce your chances of getting sick this summer season. So be sure to drink vitamin C-rich beverages, wash your hands regularly, get some restful sleep, practice good sanitation habits, exercise more often, manage your symptoms if they arise, and visit the doctor right away if all else fails.
