Healthy Homemade Freezer Pops

July 08, 2020

It's National Freezer Pop Day today! And what better way to celebrate than share with you a healthy homemade freezer pop recipe! But first, just a small history lesson.

Just this year The Jel Sert Co. founded National Freezer Pop Day to celebrate the summer and being a kid with freezer pops. The Jel Sert Co. is the maker of Fla-Vor-Ice, Otter Pops, Pop Ice, Kool Pops, All Sport, and Wyler’s Authentic Italian Ice.

In 2020, the Registrar at National Day Calendar proclaimed the day to be observed on July 8th, annually.

How cool is that!? My kids will be reminding me of this often!

National Freezer Pop Day - July 8

As much as my kids love the store bought kind they cannot resist the healthy homemade freezer pop version.

If you have ever read the label of those freezer pops you would see ingredients like:

Water, high fructose corn syrup, fruit juice (contains one or more of the following: apple, grape or pear juice from concentrate), contains less than 2% of the following: citric and/or fumaric acid, natural and artificial flavors, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), red 40, yellow 5, yellow 6, blue 1.

Having natural ingredients is something we value at our house so I make our own homemade freezer pops using healthy options like fruit and honey.

Tips for making healthy homemade freezer pops:

1. Use those almost expired fruits!

When your fruit seems like its slightly overripe then blend those bad boys up and freeze them into popsciple molds! Simple as that! When fruit is just right at overripe they have the highest sugar content making your homemade freezer pops sweet without having to add any sweeteners.

2. Use natural sweeteners if needed.

Artificial sweeteners are shown to be linked to many health issues and should be avoided at all costs. Using natural sweeteners like honey, guava, or maple syrup can add a touch of sweetness if your fruit was not quiet ripe enough.

3. Add a liquid.

Splashing in a tablespoon or two of fruit juice will make your freezer pop smooth and more enjoyable. The things you can add to these healthy homemade freezer pops are endless!

Try coconut milk for a creamy freezer pop!

Most importantly- ENJOY!

The fruit and juice combinations can be mixed and matched just as unique and creative as you'd like! Our favorite flavor for making our healthy homemade freezer pops is made with strawberries, bananas, coconut milk, and a touch of honey.

What flavor combo would you use to make healthy homemade freezer pops for your family?
