Having A Positive Effect On Elderly Relatives: What You Can Do To Help

February 12, 2020

Many of us will have older relatives in our lives or someone we know who is older. It’s a fact of life that as each day passes we get a day older and before we know it, we will have lived a life. But, sometimes in the grips of our daily routines, we can forget there are others out there that perhaps rely on our visits, look forward to our chats and just want some time. They tend to be our elderly relatives and friends. At this time of year especially it’s nice to be reminded that we have a responsibility to share our lives with anyone elderly, it can certainly be a lonely time. With that in mind, here are some of the inspiring ways you could have a positive effect on an elderly person. Go on! Make someone's day today.

Give the gift of time

An elderly person has much time on their hands. Perhaps they are in a care home, or just in their own houses. Passing the time of day from one daytime TV program to the other. While I am sure they won’t be unhappy, it’s worth their weight in gold to be given the gift of time. It could be an hour where you visit and chat about your day or life. You may just pop by with a piece of cake or some leftovers you had the night before. The gift of time is just about offering a piece of you, if only for a moment. At this time of year when things seem so busy, it can be a blessing to an elderly person to get a special visit from you.

Be compassionate for their care

Sometimes there may come a time in your life where you need to start advising someone you know who is older what they should do going forward. They may not be as mobile on their feet or perhaps just need that extra bit of care. You may have to consider a home where people can be helped more freely. If you navigate here you might find some useful information that could help. Or perhaps offer up some of your own time, or consider hiring help for their property. Whatever the situation may be it’s worth remembering that you handle this subject with care, it’s a big change for some, and could take a bit of getting used to.

Ensure you listen to what they have to say

While giving the gift of time is important, it’s also vital to use that time to listen. Embrace their historical stories of when you were younger or times of war. Ask questions about their lives and how things were. Talking and communicating is so important but offering an ear to listen to what they have to say is priceless.

Consider them for family gatherings and events

At this time of year, it’s easy to forget about someone who isn’t in your life 24/7. But try and ensure you involve elderly relatives and friends. The long nights can get rather lonely, so why not invite them round for an evening meal or a weekend?

Help make life easier in general

Finally, making life that bit easier could be a fantastic way to take the burden off someone. Perhaps getting in a few bits of food for them, especially during winter when the weather is likely to put people off leaving their homes. Maybe creating a food hamper of lots of goodies they can enjoy.

Let’s hope this inspires you to think a little more about anyone elderly in your life.
